Green Built Grand Traverse Course Certification - Michael Collings, Mac Custom Homes, 2006

TRAVERSE CITY - The Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area announced recently that MAC Custom Homes received top honors in two of its Parade of Homes People's Choice award categories for single residences. According to HBA Executive Officer Kathleen Maisonville, no builder has ever won the People's Choice Award in both the large home (over 2,875 square feet) and small home (under 2,875 square feet) divisions simultaneously.
"The prestigious People's Choice Award is extremely desirable because it signifies that a builder's home design, décor and special features have captured the hearts and minds of the voting public," Maisonville said in the August issue of NewsBuilder, the association's member newsletter.
MAC Custom Homes also received first place in the Parade's small home Exterior Design & Appeal category, three second-place small home awards for Overall Home, Interior Decorating and Design, and Master Suite; and a third place Exterior Design and Appeal award for large homes. A total of 36 new homes were included in this year's Parade.
"They were both very unique homes and totally different," said Robin Collings, MAC's sales and marketing representative. "The larger home in Williamsburg had a rustic, outdoorsy feel, very warm, while the smaller Elk Rapids home had a nautical theme and a beach feel, with an interior that was tastefully decorated in water colors like blue and green."
Glen Cavanaugh, owner of the large home, who has owned 11 homes and built several from the ground up – said he was impressed by the integrity of MAC Owner/President Mike Collings, his willingness to make suggestions and changes to an architect's plans, and the workmanship of his crews.
"Mike is clearly the best builder I've ever had," Cavanaugh said. "He has a sense of humor but takes you seriously, is quick to follow up and has the best craftsmanship I've seen."
Alan Yahanda, owner of the smaller home, said he and his wife, Pam, were taken with Collings's honesty when he suggested modifications to the architect's plans that would be more efficient and save them building costs.
"It was better than we hoped for in every regard," Pam Yahanda said of her home building experience. "Mike's approach was straightforward, organized and detailed, and he helped with decision-making, so there was no stress."
Both of MAC's Parade homes were built using architect plans provided by the homeowners. In fact, MAC Owner/President Mike Collings, who also acts as project manager, said his company does not build spec homes.
"I'm not a salesman, I'm a builder – so I'm very, very involved with every aspect of the home in the building process," said Collings, who has spent the last 25 years working as a carpenter. "I run the framing, siding and interior trim crews in order to control the quality and the timing of each project. Everything I do is if I were building it for myself."
